Play, Shame, & My Vow to Pet Parents

Dear lovely subscriber,

It’s been a while, but I’m writing again—spark reignited.

A couple months ago, my cat Cloud had emergency surgery while I was out of the country: of all places, the Cloud Forest of Costa Rica. Not being there for him was one of my biggest fears come true.

This wasn't our first hospitalization. But this time, it felt so different: I had the tools, the community, and the inner steadiness to stay grounded. I could still enjoy my trip.
When I asked the land if my cat would be okay, it whispered back:
“You’re going to be okay.” 🍃

When I returned home, I cleared space to support his recovery. In that time, I reflected on what helped me stay present, and what gets in the way. The answer revealed itself when, after weeks of rest, Cloud was finally allowed to play again. His free movement reminded me:

Play is medicine.
It brings us back into our bodies. Fun teaches us to trust the moment. It signals to the brain and nervous system:
You're safe here.

And yet—so often we forget to play. We fall into worry, shame, or guilt. We disconnect.

I recently shared a list on Instagram: “7 ‘Bad’ Pet Parent Things I’ll Never Shame You For.” It’s for anyone who’s ever questioned if they’re doing it right. It's my vow to see you as both whole and still becoming.
If you need a little relief from the pressure, I hope it meets you where you are.

Your pet doesn’t need you to be perfect. They need you grounded and enchanted. So I'm curious: What does "play" mean to you? Hit reply and let me know!

With love,
Shay

🐒 Animal Tracks Needs Support

Recently, I was invited for a behind the scenes tour at Animal Tracks, an animal sanctuary in Agua Dulce, CA 📍 Their guided tours involve animal rescue stories and fun facts that educate on creating a sustainable environment for both wild animals and people. If you're in the area, please consider booking an experience with them to support their care for these animals [they even have kangaroo yoga!]

Community News is something new I'm introducing. Please feel free to send me your relevant news so I can help spread the word! 🐝

Dear beautiful soul, I want to share a little game I love—a mini-psychology exercise that’s as playful as it is revealing.🧠✨It’s a gentle way to get to know yourself on a deeper level and uncover patterns that might be quietly shaping the way you connect with your pet, your relationships, and even yourself. Take a moment and answer these in your head: What’s your favorite color—and why? (List three deep reasons.) What’s your favorite animal—and why? (Again, think of three reasons.) What’s...

Dear Reader,Tomorrow, I’ll be opening a letter I wrote to myself a year ago and updating my vision book—snapshots of my dreams and intentions for the year ahead. As the year comes to a close and I sit with this ritual, I’m struck by the same realization: the goals I believed in most clearly, the ones that felt tangible and within reach, were the ones that came to life the fastest.🐆 Here's why: while I love visualizing my wildest dreams, I don’t always feel fully connected to them. Can you...

pet altar

via Pinterest Hi Reader,I've been diving down a deep rabbit hole of animal altars on Pinterest. This was prompted by a powerful animal message during a recent pet reading, and now I feel SO inspired to finally create one in my new apartment!I've been getting intuitive nudges to do this for months, but this reading was the final push I needed. Another beautiful reminder of how connected we are—y'all come into my life right when I need it, too. Here’s what happened:A client came to me with a...
